The at-home newborn session: how it really works, from the first message to your photos

No studio, no complicated poses: a session at your place, at your baby's pace. Here's the full walkthrough, so you know exactly what to expect.

In short
  • The ideal time: within the first three weeks, when baby sleeps a lot and still has those newborn features.
  • Plan on about 2 hours, feeds, diaper changes and cuddles included: baby sets the pace.
  • No need to tidy the whole house: one bright room is enough.

A lifestyle newborn session is the opposite of a studio: no set, no baby arranged in elaborate positions. I come to your home and photograph what's really happening, those first slightly hazy days, full of tenderness and fatigue, that we forget so quickly.

When should you plan the session?

The ideal time is within the first three weeks of life. Baby sleeps a lot, still has those tiny curled-up hands, delicate skin, and “still in the womb” positions. But a lifestyle session is still possible a little later: it will simply be more awake, with eye contact.

The easiest way is to book during your pregnancy with an approximate date, then let me know when baby arrives. We then set the date together, depending on how you and baby are doing.

How it unfolds, step by step

  1. Before: we talk about what you'd like to capture (siblings, the family pet, a family heirloom, the nursery…).
  2. When I arrive: we take a moment to chat. I find the room with the most beautiful light.
  3. During: I photograph everyday moments: breastfeeding or the bottle, diaper changes, sometimes bath time, cuddles on the bed, big brother discovering those tiny feet.
  4. Breaks: if baby cries or gets hungry, we stop. That's built into the session time.
  5. After: I make the selection and edit the photos, then you receive a private online gallery.
The problem

Your apartment is small, full of boxes and baby things, and you're embarrassed about “the state of the place”.

The solution

One bright room is enough, often the bedroom or the living room by a window. We only tidy what will be in the frame, and I compose my images around it. Nobody will see the laundry drying right next to it.

A real-life example

Picture a family with a three-year-old who's a little jealous. Rather than asking him to “hold the baby”, I give him a mission: show his little sister his favorite books, or sing her a song. He takes it very seriously, forgets the camera, and that's when the most genuine images happen.

My tip

Don't put on makeup to “look good” if you're exhausted. A shower, clothes you feel good in, and that's it. These photos tell the story of this time as it really is, and in a few years, that's exactly what you'll want to see again.

Frequently asked questions

When should I have a newborn photo session?

Ideally within the first three weeks of life, when baby sleeps a lot. A lifestyle session is still possible later, with a more awake baby.

How long does an at-home newborn session last?

About two hours, because we follow baby's rhythm: feeds, diaper changes and cuddles are all part of the session.

Do I need to tidy the whole house?

No. One bright room is enough, and we simply tidy what will be in the frame.
