Baby's crying, won't sleep, is hungry: it's not a problem for your newborn session

It's new parents' number one fear before the session. Good news: a lifestyle session is made for exactly this. Tears, feeds and wake-ups are all part of the story.

In short
  • A lifestyle session follows baby's rhythm: nothing is ever forced.
  • Tears and feeds often make the strongest images: comforting arms, the way parents look at their baby.
  • The planned time includes breaks; there's no stopwatch.

I see it in the messages the night before: “He slept terribly last night, we're worried he'll be fussy tomorrow, should we postpone?”. My answer is almost always the same: we keep the date and see how it goes. Here's why.

A lifestyle session doesn't depend on a sleeping baby

In a studio, a lot of photos require a baby in deep sleep, placed in a precise position. In lifestyle, I don't pose baby: I photograph you with him. If he's awake, we capture eye contact, tiny hands grabbing a finger. If he's asleep, we make the most of it for the details. Both are beautiful.

The problem

Baby has been crying for twenty minutes and you can feel the pressure building. You feel like you're “ruining” the session.

The solution

I put the camera down, and we take our time. You comfort him as you usually would, and I step back. Often, that's exactly when I take one or two very powerful images: your face against his, your hand on his back. Then we calmly pick up again.

We pause and wait for baby to settle.

Feeds and bottles are part of the session

Breastfeeding or bottle, it's a moment of your daily life worth keeping. I always photograph it very discreetly, and only if you're comfortable: we can keep just close-ups of hands, eyes, the light on baby's cheek.

What I do to keep everything calm

A real-life example

Picture a ten-day-old baby who won't go back to sleep. His dad holds him skin to skin by the window and starts rocking him. Little by little, baby calms down and falls asleep on his chest. Those ten minutes become the parents' favorite series, even though none of it was planned.

My tip

The only real reason to postpone a session is health: if baby or you are sick, we change the date, no hesitation. For a bad night, we keep the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my baby cries during the photo session?

We stop, you comfort him, and we pick up again once he's calm. Session time includes breaks, and these moments often make really beautiful images.

Does baby need to be asleep for a lifestyle newborn session?

No. In lifestyle, baby isn't posed: we photograph moments with you, whether he's awake or asleep.
