Maternity, then newborn: why tell both chapters with the same photographer

The bump, then the baby it carried. Two sessions that echo each other, with someone you already know on the day you open the door with your newborn.

In short
  • One booking, two dates: around 30-34 weeks, then within baby's first three weeks.
  • You already know your photographer when she arrives at your home after the birth: everything is more relaxed.
  • The two series echo each other visually: same tones, sometimes the same places, the same eye.

Lots of parents book the maternity session, then think “we'll see about the newborn one”. Then baby arrives, the days fly by, and the newborn session never happens. Booking both together mostly frees you from a decision at a time when you no longer have the energy to make it.

The ideal timeline

  1. Around your 5th month: you book both sessions.
  2. Between 30 and 34 weeks: maternity session, outdoors or at home.
  3. When baby arrives: you send me a quick message whenever you feel ready.
  4. Within the first three weeks: newborn session at your home.

What it changes, in practice

The first session builds a connection. On the newborn day, I'm no longer a stranger walking into your home at a very intimate time: we know each other, you know how I work, and you're much more relaxed. It shows hugely in the photos.

The two series echo each other, too. We can bring back the same light, the same dress, or a shared spot: the bump photo by the living room window, then baby in your arms in the same place a few weeks later.

A real-life example

Picture a couple who has their maternity session in their living room, next to the still-empty crib. Six weeks later, we take an image in the same spot, with baby asleep in that crib. Side by side in an album, these two photos tell the whole story without a word.

The problem

You're nervous about committing to a newborn session when you don't know how the birth will go.

The solution

The newborn session date stays flexible: we set it together after the birth, when you feel ready. If recovery takes longer than expected, we adapt.

My tip

Think about the album from the start. Both sessions together in one book is the kind of keepsake you show your child when they ask, “what was it like when I was in your tummy?”.
