Maternity photo session: when to book it for a beautiful bump (without being exhausted)
The sweet spot is usually between weeks 30 and 34. Here's why, and how to plan your session so it stays a gentle moment, not one more chore on the list.
Maternity- The most comfortable time is usually between 30 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
- Book around your 5th month: the soft-light evening slots go fast, especially in spring and summer.
- Twins, a tiring pregnancy or a risk of early delivery: we move the session up to around 28 weeks.
It's often the very first question I get, sometimes even before we talk about the location or outfits. And it's a good one, because the answer really changes the result: too early, and the bump is still shy; too late, and tiredness takes over and you can't enjoy the moment anymore.
The sweet spot: between 30 and 34 weeks
Around the 7th month and early in the 8th, your bump is beautifully round, it draws a real silhouette in the photos, and most moms-to-be still feel comfortable enough to walk a little, sit in the grass or stand for a few minutes facing the light.
After 35 or 36 weeks, it's absolutely still possible, but I'll plan a shorter session, closer to home, with more breaks. The goal isn't to get a photo at any cost, it's for you to keep a lovely memory of this moment.
Count in weeks of pregnancy from your last period, the way your midwife does (in France it's called “SA”). If you give me your due date, we'll work out the ideal window together and match it with the sunset times for that period.

When should you book?
Ideally around your 5th month. Maternity sessions mostly happen at the end of the day, when the light turns soft and golden. Those slots are limited: one or two sessions per evening at most, and only when the weather plays along. Booking early gives you your choice of date, and gives me time to plan the location and outfits with you.
You're expecting twins, or your doctor has mentioned a risk of delivering a little early.
We move the session up to around 28 to 30 weeks. In that case your bump is already very present, and you avoid the stress of “racing against” the date.

What if baby arrives before the session?
It happens, and it's no big deal. We simply talk about it: the session can become a newborn session, or a family session a few weeks later. The important thing is to let me know as soon as you can, so we can find the simplest solution for you together.
Picture a mom-to-be due at the end of July. Her ideal window falls between late May and mid-June: the days are long, the evenings are still mild, and the light in the Calanques or the Alpilles is stunning around 8 pm. In the middle of July, it would be much hotter and the session would be more tiring. So we pick mid-June, late in the day, somewhere easy to reach.

How to make the session truly comfortable
You don't need to know how to pose. I guide you, I tell you where to put your hands, how to breathe, where to look. What I'm looking for are gestures that feel like you: a hand resting on your bump without thinking, a fit of giggles, a shared glance.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, but it will be shorter, closer to home and with more breaks. Your comfort comes first.
