What to wear for your maternity session? Outfits that truly flatter your bump
A flowing dress that moves in the breeze, a color that matches the landscape, shoes you can slip off easily: your outfit sets half the mood of your photos.
Maternity- Go for fabrics that move (chiffon, linen, fine knit) and cuts that hug your bump.
- Choose solid colors, soft or earthy, that blend with the location.
- Plan two outfits at most: a long dress and something simpler that feels more “you”.
Your outfit shouldn't feel like a costume. It should look like you, just a little more polished. In a maternity session, it mainly does two things: shows the line of your bump, and adds movement to the image. Here's what works best, and what I'd steer you away from.
Fabrics: what moves, what hugs
The most beautiful images often come from fabric that flutters a little in the wind, or follows the curve of your bump. Two types work really well:
- Long, flowing dresses (chiffon, voile, viscose): they bring movement, especially by the sea or on a hillside.
- Fine and ribbed knits: a simple fitted dress outlines your bump perfectly, for a more modern look.
Linen is lovely too, as long as you're okay with it wrinkling a little. That's part of its charm.

Colors: soft, solid, in tune with the location
Solid colors age well. Ten years from now, a cream, sand, sage green, terracotta or dusty blue dress will still look just as beautiful on your walls. Big prints, logos and neon colors draw the eye away from your face and your bump.
Think about the setting too: on the pale rocks of the Calanques, a white or sky-blue dress melts into the landscape; in a golden field, a deeper color stands out better.
You have nothing “nice” that fits you right now, and you don't want to buy a dress you'll only wear once.
Maternity dress rental exists, and it's a great option. You can also go for a stretchy knit dress that you'll keep wearing after the birth. And if you're unsure, send me photos of your options: I'll tell you honestly what will look best.

Your partner, and older siblings
No need to match. Just stay in the same color family. If you're in a cream dress, a beige, off-white or light blue shirt will work perfectly. The only thing to avoid is a black T-shirt with a big slogan, which “cuts” the image.
Picture a sunset session on the Côte Bleue. The mom-to-be wears a long sand-colored voile dress, her partner an off-white linen shirt with rolled-up sleeves. As the sun slips behind the sea, the fabric turns almost see-through and golden, and the bump stands out against the light. It's simple, and it's exactly what we were after.

The details that make all the difference
Try your outfit on at home at least once before the session, sitting, standing, walking. If it's tight, itchy or rides up, you'll think about it the whole time, and it will show on your face.
